2017 has been the year of TV for me.
When I first moved to Canada at the beginning of the year, it was grey and it was snowing and I barely knew anyone and I was just not having it. So I fell back into old habits. You guessed it: putlocker! ( This girl couldn’t even afford a Netflix account…)
So after and entire year of devouring full seasons of pretty much anything that had good reviews, now is the time for some opiniating (it’s a thing look it up).
The Emmys are around the corner and as Mr Preanutbutter says” Everyone is a critic”. Except this time, I won’t try to predict who will actually win and we’ll have to just go with who should win. Because there is no justice in this world. And also because the Emmys are today if not now. So I need to post this ASAP.
So without further ado:
Better Call Saul
The Handmaid’s Tale
This Is Us
OUF! This category is so hard!
- “This is us” transformed family drama for eh-ver! There wasn’t an episode where I wasn’t bawling…
- “Better Call Saul” has Breaking Bad’s cinematography
- “The Crown” was pretty great
- “Stranger Things” and “Westworld” I can’t speak about becasue I haven’t seen (I don’t do Syfi) but people won’t shut up about them.
And then there’s The Handmaid’s Tale. My God this show!!!! I don’t care if it’s based on a novel and that it’s not really “original content”. It is such a poignant story. This is the first time in years that I watch a show as it airs (Last time was Mad Men). And the minute the episode is over, I cannot wait for the next one. And throughout the entire week, I am totally immersed in the show. I might have taken it too far: I woke up one day, drew the curtains and said to myself “We’ve been sent good weather”. Also “Praised be” may or may not have become official gap fillers in my day to day lingo.
So ya. The Handmaid’s Tale it is. In any case, I am happy that GoT wasn’t nominated. So at least, one of these shows will get some love.
By the way, there’s this funny or die video that’s pretty hilarious:
LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA
Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
Anthony Hopkins, Westworld
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys, The Americans
Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
Kevin Spacey, House of Cards
Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
Damn. This one is hard too.
- I still haven’t watched Ray Donovan and I don’t know a single soul that watches it. So I don’t know.
- What I do know is that Sterling Brown is playing Randall which is probably the best character ever. like ever. As in. In life.
- I also know that Anthony Hopkins is Anthony Hopkins. And that Kevin Spacey is Kevin Spacey (This season was so good!)
- There is nothing I want more than for Mathew Rhys to be an Emmy winner. The man can act. This season of the Americans was pretty good. But looking back. I really can’t think of a single scene where he went “beast mode” and acted the shit out of it. So I don’t think he actually has a shot.
- I haven’t talked about Milo. Because I am not a Milo fan. I hate his voice and his acting leaves me totally unphased. That’s how it’s been since the Heroes and Gilmore Girls days and I don’t see it changing in the near future.
So I’m gonna go with Sterling K Brown. I may be biased. But who can blame me? Have you seen his face?
LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA
Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder
Claire Foy, The Crown
Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale
Keri Russell, The Americans
Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld
Robin Wright, House of Cards
Ok a few things first:
- How is HTGAWM still a thing? I haven’t seen it but from what I hear, Viola is the one doing all the heavy lifting and pretty much everything else is below average. Are people even still watching this?
- Also. Why is Rhea Seahorn from Better Call Saul not on here?
Anyways. No surprises here. My vote goes to my girl Lizzy. Peggy Olsen would be proud.
SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA
Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul
Ron Cephas Jones, This Is Us
David Harbour, Stranger Things
Michael Kelly, House of Cards
John Lithgow, The Crown
Mandy Patinkin, Homeland
Jeffrey Wright, Westworld
Funny how except for a few nominees, this category might as well be “Grandpa of the year”. For me, it’s tough to pick between Jonathan Banks and Ron Jones. Banks did an amazing job in Season 2 and 3. No one can deny it.
But. This is the second time that I see Ron Jones on screen (the first time being on Mr Robot) and damn it if that’s not a completely different role! His character in This is Us is so layered and interesting, I think it plays to his advantage. And I think he should win this one.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA
Uzo Aduba, Orange Is the New Black
Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things
Ann Dowd, The Handmaid’s Tale
Chrissy Metz, This Is Us
Thandie Newton, Westworld
Samira Wiley, The Handmaid’s Tale
These ladies are top notch! Chrissy in This is Us is phenomenal! Ann Dowd scared me shitless until she made me relate to her character (like how?). But Samira is something else. She is on a whole’nother level. I never watched Orange is New Black so I never got to see her before. Which is a shame, becasue she is such a natural. She works the camera like it’s nobody’s business. It’s like she’s not even acting! I would be so happy if she won! Did I mention that I am 100 % biased because Samira is actually my mother’s name?
GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Hank Azaria, Ray Donovan
Brian Tyree Henry, This Is Us
Gerald McRaney, This Is Us
Ben Mendelsohn, Bloodline
Denis O’Hare, This Is Us
BD Wong, Mr Robot
BD Wong. No explanations needed.
GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid’s Tale
Laverne Cox, Orange is the New Black
Ann Dowd, The Leftovers
Shannon Purser, Stranger Things
Cecily Tyson, How to Get Away With Murder
Alison Wright, The Americans
NGL. Alexis feels like more of a supporting actress than a guest actress. But as much as I loved her character in the Handmaid’s tale, I’m still gonna go with Alison Wright. She appears in just a few scenes in the first couple episodes of The Americans. And anytime, they show a scene in Russia, you hope to catch a glimpse of her. That’s how captivating this lady is.
Now that we’re done with Drama, let’s go to Comedy.
Master of None
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Insecure isn’t on here. Better Things isn’t on here. Why bother?
LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY
Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
Aziz Ansari, Master of None
Zach Galifianakis, Baskets
Donald Glover, Atlanta
William H. Macy, Shameless
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
Donald Glover. Thank you very much.
LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY
Pamela Adlon, Better Things
Jane Fonda, Grace and Frankie
Allison Janney, Mom
Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish
Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie
Pamelaaaaa. My moon and my stars, and the wind beneath my wings. I swear. if Julia Louis Dreyfus wins a again…..
GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Riz Ahmed, Girls
Dave Chappelle, Saturday Night Live
Tom Hanks, Saturday Night Live
Hugh Laurie, Veep
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Saturday Night Live
Matthew Rhys, Girls
Matthew Rhys in Girls was such a straaaaange character. I would be so ashamed for him if he won an Emmy for just being weird on Girls and not for the phenomenal work he’s been doing in the Americans. All the other nominees are excellent so I frankly don’t know who should get it.
GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Becky Ann Baker, Girls
Angela Bassett, Master of None
Carrie Fisher, Catastrophe
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Wanda Sykes, black-ish
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Hannah’s mom in this season was so funny and depressing, it was honestly one of the best characters in the entire show. I think she should get it.
Now on to TV movies and limited Series.
Outstanding Limited Series
Big Little Lies (HBO)
Feud: Bette and Joan (FX)
Genius (Nat Geo)
The Night Of (HBO)
I’ve seen them all except Genius. The Night Of was phenomenal. Big Little lies had a story to tell until the very last second. But Feud. knocked my socks off. I cannot explain how smart this show is. The story, the cast, the acting, the costumes, the sets. Just superb. I would be so disappointed if they don’t get it.
LEAD ACTOR, TV MOVIE/LIMITED SERIES
Riz Ahmed, The Night Of
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: The Lying Detective
Robert De Niro, The Wizard of Lies
Ewan McGregor, Fargo
Geoffrey Rush, Genius
John Turturro, The Night Of
I was gonna say “Riz Ahmed” before I even looked at the nominees. Because I just thought that Turturro was nominated for supporting actor. It’s so hard to compare their performances. So I think both should win but they’ll probably cancel each other out and De Niro will get it.
LEAD ACTRESS, TV MOVIE/LIMITED SERIES
Carrie Coon, Fargo
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies
Jessica Lange, Feud
Susan Sarandon, Feud
Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies
Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. Because they’re equally brilliant. I may have a tiny little preference for Susan becasue she’s sooo cool. But both are not just legends. They are stars.
